The Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) formula which we have used in this calculator uses the variable of height, weight, age and gender to provide your BMR. BMR is the energy your body requires just to stay alive- ie breathing, keeping your heart pumping, organ functions etc. We will also calculate your total energy needs with your current activity levels factored in!

What is the Harris Benedict Equation?

The Harris Benedict Equation is a method used to estimate your daily calorie requirements by using your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) and then multiplies by a number that corresponds with your activity level. Please note: The equation does not factor Calories burned by bodies with large muscle mass or the additional calories provided by excess body fat. Therefore, this equation will be a good estimate in most people but the very muscular (will under-estimate calorie needs) and the very overweight (will over-estimate calorie needs).
